Mi mejor amigo La boda de

The day of the wedding arrived and by now, SJ and I were totally ready for the journey. We had made contact with the outside world, got a general idea of where to meet up with Neal, go the times, and were out the door in record time. The wedding was at 11am, so we knew we should be out the door by 8. This would give us time to get to the hotel where Neal was, change, then head over to the location of the wedding. What we didn’t account for were road closings and the inability for Google Maps to give an accurate location of the hotel.

Where we're going, we NEED roads.

Jess was the driver and I was the navigator. I had my maps, my phone, and my eyes on the road. She was driving and not missing a beat. We soon realized that to get around this place you had to drive like the locals. The locals drive like they just don’t give a damn. So I had her going left and right and here and there and all over the place. We finally turned down what we Google thought was the road where the hotel was. As it turns out, it was simply a dead end on a cliff. We sat there for a few moments, took a few deep breaths, and started driving again. I can’t say how amazed I am at Jess’ calmness during all this. We were driving around people and busses and bikes and all manner of things that were jockeying for spot on the road. She zipped around here and there it was amazing.

Where the streets are paved with people and busses and cars

I finally got in touch with Neal and he informed us that the hotel was in the south west part of town. We were currently driving through the north west. So we hauled ass down that way, and finally in a bold move on Jess’ part, asked a local for directions. This lady didn’t understand a bit of English, and we sure as hell didn’t understand her. What we were able to communicate was “Holiday Inn Santa Anna”. She understood, gave us some very detailed directions in Spanish using land marks like “banco” and “St. Nicholas” and making some sort of hand gesture like we’d be driving around a circle. We jetted away and sure enough we passed a bank, a big sign that was for some St. Nicholas thing and went  through a round-a-bout! Next thing we knew we were at the hotel. I’ve never been more excited in my life. Jess shared in this joy. We felt so accomplished and proud of ourselves. We had overcome a LOT on this 3 hour journey and made it. There was no obstacle we couldn’t overcome at this point.

So we met up with Neal, quickly changed clothes then hopped back in Pedro for our trip to the location for the wedding. Luckily, we were following someone. After a mile or so, we soon realized this was going to be an interesting ride. The roads kept getting steeper and steeper. We were climbing further and further into the clouds. Once we finally got to our destination we had a beautiful view of the city. We had to be like 3 miles in the air (probably not that high, but it felt like it). The location was beautiful and the wedding got started as soon as we got there.

Contrary to most weddings I’ve been to, or been part of, this one was almost a “figure it out as you go” kinda thing. There wasn’t a ton of organization, but that was part of the fun. I was told to walk in with Neal, then wait, but now go, but you were supposed to stand over there, ok, now you all go sit down and BOOM, I now pronounce you husband and wife! It was a short and sweet ceremony, where unbeknownst to Neal and Jude they had to say their own vows. They totally winged it and it was perfect.

True happiness!

After the ceremony, we did the usual every possible picture combination possible thing. The food was traditional El Salvadorian and fantastic. We danced, talked, laughed, and just enjoyed ourselves. The Bishops had a beautiful wedding. Everything turned out as it should. There was no “backstage drama”, all the guests were happy, and it was a wonderful time. I love seeing my friends happy, and to be there on this day of ultimate happiness for both of them was an honor. To share it with the woman I love most in this world, made it unforgettable. This was quite possibly the best wedding I’ve ever been to….so far. ;)

As the day went on, the clouds rolled in. At first, we thought something was on fire, but as it turns out, it was just the clouds rolling UP the mountain we were on. Knowing our luck with driving and visibility down to about 10ft, SJ and I decided to roll out before the weather got any worse. We hopped in the car and took off down the mountain. Jess was now a pro El Salvadorian driver and handled the roads like a champ. We were soon below the clouds and well on our way back to the resort. We made it in record time and quickly got into our bathing suits so we could enjoy the evening by the pool. After all it was our final night in this place and we wanted to make the best of if.

Oh fog!

Our final day in El Salvador had come to a close. We had witnessed our friends getting married and survived another journey in a foreign land. The next day was our final adventure and what an adventure it was going to be.

EL SALBADOOOOR!!!

The map that saved our lives!

When Neal asked us to come to his and Jude’s wedding, I wasn’t sure that an excursion to another country would fit within the things we were going to be able to do this year. However, after much deliberating, Jess and I decided to do it. So we budgeted out the next few months and booked the trip. The events that followed were something I will never forget. :)

The morning of the trip sprang on us faster than we thought but we were ready. Chase was dropped off with his dad and we hit up the airport. We had buddy passes so we were on stand-by. No worries, we were about 5 hours early to the airport. It was freezing cold at the airport as well as on the plane. Being in first class certainly helped, but it was still chilly. The notion of anything cold soon evaporated. From what I remember it was about TWO THOUSAND DEGREES in El Salvador when we got there. The humidity was off the charts and it was a new kind of heat. Something the likes of Georgia just doesn’t have. No worries. This was a tropical adventure.

Our car "Pedro"

Having never been out of the country, Jess and I were ill prepared for the lack of U.S. Citizens and anyone that spoke english. We managed to round up our luggage and get to the rental car place. I had enough sense to pre-book us a car so we were quick to actually get in the car and get on the road. Despite not being able to speak the native tongue we were able to communicate as needed. The car they gave us was this 1992 Nissan Sentra that had seen better days. I’m not sure if they realized a) who was going to be driving this car and b) what country they were in. The roads were rough at best. Never-the-less, we made the best of it, and Jess, me, and “Pedro” (that’s the name we dubbed our car) were on our way.

It took about 30 mins to figure out where we were exactly, but once we got going it was an awesome drive. That is until we made it to the river that we had to drive through. Apparently, the roads in El Salvador aren’t their highest priority and a recent storm had washed away one of the bridges. Thankfully, the local children were gracious enough to navigate us down a dirt path through the actual river (about 12″ deep) to the other side. I will forever be grateful to the little children of El Salvador.

The rest of the ride was pretty straight forward. It was about 2 hours driving through gorgeous country side and cliffs overlooking the ocean. You could see mountains way off in the distance that dwarf anything I’ve seen before. The camera was all a flurry. With no music to keep us company, we resorted to talking to each other. It’s a foreign concept that seems be long gone from some relationships, but not this one. We talked about the cows and people on bikes. About how the people there seem to have a simple life. How no one seems to harbor any sort of ill intentions or desire to harm or wrong us. People were just nice there. The country was “untouched” as Jess put it. With out the distraction of a radio or technology or Facebooks and Twitters we really got to reconnect. That ride was something I will always remember.

Around 3pm El Salv. time we rolled up on the hotel. It was a stunning place and we figured surely, there would be other gringos there and someone to speak our language. Again, we were mistaken. All the hotel staff and guests and armed guards were either from El Salvador or from El Salvador. This didn’t stop Jess and I though, we were going to make the best of it. It took us a while to figure out what was going on, but we soon realized that at 3 they start checking people in. We were all (like 200 people) into a big conference room where we were assigned a number. This tiny little card with “88″ was all we were given. Up on stage there was a guy that sounded like a cross between a Spanish auctioneer and a monster truck announcer was going to town. We saw people check their cards, then head up to one of five booths. We deduced that they were calling out the numbers. Jess knew enough Spanish to know that “88″ was “ochenta y ocho”. So there we sat, listening for the those 2 words. Eventually, our number was called and we worked our way through what the host lady was saying at the booth. We got our key and a map of the hotel and headed to our room. The room was very nice. It was a million degrees outside, but inside, it was nice and cool.

The end of day one

After some unpacking and re-gaining of our bearings we donned our bathing suits, some towels and hit the pool. The resort was all inclusive, so the drinks were free. However they were served in the worlds smallest cups. Jess and I fixed that problem with a trip to the gift shop. We got our huge coffee mugs and were set for the rest of the trip. The rest of the afternoon was spent just walking around the resort, making sure we knew where everything was (bars, restaurants, spa, etc). Dinner was at Pastafari (a fusion of Italian and Jamaican food… still not sure that’s a successful combo). We wanted to hit up the shows or “discotech”, but sadly we were exhausted and decided to call it an early night. We had survived our first day in a foreign country where only about 1% of the people spoke our language. We had driven a tiny little car literally “over the river and through the woods” through streets lined with cows, old ladies on bikes, people selling shoes, DVDs, mangos, and children. It was an adventure. It was unforgettable, and it was only the beginning.

Our first weekend cabin trip

So I have to say that this past weekend was exactly as it should be. Well, there are a few things I would have changed, but for the most part it was every thing that I could have imagined that a 30th birthday weekend cabin trip could’ve been.

The weekend started off on Friday night, when Jess and I headed north to my parent’s cabin. We met up with Neal, Jude, Pam, and Jason for a bite of dinner, then got on the road. Since it’s pretty much a guarantee that none of my friends can hang with me when it comes to driving, I headed on out. Chase quickly fell asleep in the back seat and Jess and I jammed to some jams. Once we got about 5 miles from the cabin things got a bit crazy.

So, I’ve been getting Jess warmed up to all things horror movies. She’s been watching the Halloween series with me, and I have to say that I am in love with the fact that she is loving the movies. They aren’t great movies by any stretch of the imagination, but they are pretty good. You really do get a good sense of who Michael Myers is… until H20 when they disregard the previous 3 movies. Where was I? Oh, so on the way up it was dark and a bit on the creepy side since it was crazy dark out and the glow of the city was long since gone. We were doing just fine, then out of nowhere we both just kind froze up and nearly shat our pants. Why you ask? Well on the right shoulder, wearing a white night gown with a blue floral print, long dark brown stringy hair, no shoes, and running for her life, was a young girl. That’s right, it was around 10 PM in the mountains, and there was a chick running about 6ft from the road. Her arms were flailing and she was just running. Had she not seen it I would’ve sworn that it wasn’t real. Trust me… it was real. So yeah, there was this chick running down the road. Kinda freaked us out for the rest of the trip (and our lives). Needless to say we (me) kept on driving and arrived at the cabin about 15 mins later.

We got there, jumped on the horn and guided every one else to the cabin and then proceeded to plow through some liquor. It was only 6 people, but damn we demolished the hell out of some Vodka and Jack Daniel’s. It was a good night and we all had a ton of fun. The next day we got up and I whipped up some eggs, bacon, grits, and toast. Everyone got up and we then headed out to Cleveland. What’s in Cleveland you ask? Well Babyland General (”general” as in “general hospital”). This was the first time I had been there in many, many, years. The building looked like it should’ve been condemned many years ago, but it’s still there rocking it’s creepiness. Inside it was pretty hard to witness. There were several “babies” waiting to be adopted for a price ($300+) and a tree that gave birth to a doll. What?! Yeah, there was a tree that gave birth to a doll. There really is no other way to describe it. Check out the pics on www.sniperbear.net. It’ll give you a good idea of what all went on there.

After the Hospital of Doom we headed back to the cabin. Well, we stopped on the way and got some fresh made beef jerky, boiled peanuts, and apple cider. Back at the cabin, everyone took a nap. Jess, Neal, and Jude were out for hours. Jess wasn’t feeling too well, so she was O.U.T. That’s ok, she’s pretty much the love of my life, so she can sleep as long as she wants. Chase and I watched the UGA game, cooked up some food and just hung out. After everyone (except for Jess) woke up, we decided we were going to head to Dahlonega and experience Oktoberfest. Jess was still not feeling well and thus, decided to stay behind. I wish she could’ve gone with us, but it would be better to rest up and be well in the future than to push through the night and end up being worse off the next day. So, we got there and farted around for a bit, and eventually decided we’d had enough and headed back home.

Back at the cabin we sat around for a bit, had some dinner, caught up on the day, and then jumped right into Dawn of the Dead (the new one…where the zombies run instead of meander about). Jess was a bit freaked out since she’s not really keen on the whole horror movie thing, but she made it. We plowed through the movie and then Jess and I headed to bed. The rest of the group stayed up and watched Blades of Glory. I say that Jess and I got the better end of the deal…

Sunday morning, it was pancakes and sausage, milling about, some fun times at my grandmother’s doll house of morbidity, then a quick drive home. The weather on Sunday could not have been any better. We stopped by Danny’s Restaurant for some soul food, then took our sweet time enjoying the mountain roads and beautiful weather. The rest of the day we spent laying around, taking naps (mostly me), watching the Falcon’s game, and generally just being together.

All-in-all, this was a fantabulous weekend. I won’t soon forget the crazy lady, taking Chase to Dahlonega, witnessing a tree give birth to a doll, or Jess schooling everyone on how to play cards. Thank you to everyone that came out and I hope we can do it again soon!

Take me out to the ball game…

Tonight I hit up the braves game with Neal, Sean, Valerie, Lacy, and Brad. It was the first time I’d been to a braves game in years. Had a great time. It was good to just chillax with some friends.

Anyway, here’s some pics.

It really was a lot of fun and I hope to make it to another game this season. I don’t really follow the game or the Braves, but I do follow fun and friends. I support that cause!

Lemme break it down for ya

So the birthday weekend has come and gone, and I have to admit that I’m very happy. Everything went according to plan. The weather was perfect, the company was great, the cabin was cozy, etc. I had a blast.

today i cried…

Man, things just really suck right now. So here’s the scoop:

On the way to work, I was listening to R.E.M. – Automatic for the People and it mad me really sad. Rather than turn it to something else or put in something a little more up beat, I kept listening. For a change I wanted to be sad. I figure this way any of the emotion that I’ve been holding in would get out. Over the past few weeks/months things have gone both uphill and downhill. I know that seems impossible, but it’s true.

Things with Maggie and I are great. Well, I say great, but what I mean is that the relationship is great, but the living conditions (the constant mess, the 2 house to keep up with, the pets…grrrr…the pets, the laundry, the yard, the dishes, the fridge, the washing machine, the paint, the TV, the TiVo, the garage, the garbage, the WoW, the carpet, the lack of being outside and hanging out with ALL of our friends, the inability to sleep through the whole night, the junk food, the cheese, the mud, the slow toilet, the routine, the traffic, the hours, the annoying people, etc.) kinda suck.

I’m done with it. I want to exercise, play the piano, watch movies, watch TV, watch stuff on TiVo that came on yesterday, go outside, plant some trees, rake, swim, run, walk, jog, drive, go to Sean and Neal’s place, go to Sunday Night Dinner, see my parents at least once a week, talk to Maggie’s mom, talk to Jenny and Andy more (there are some awesome people), impress my boss, wear clothes that fit, fly a kite, have a picnic, bake something, cook food that doesn’t burn, get up early, go to be late, stop, go, talk, laugh, bathe, fart, finish Harry Potter (I already know the ending but that’s not going to stop me from reading it), re-read all the other Harry Potter books, read another book, anything that I want with out feeling depressed.

So here’s the plan. I will turn off the computer and only turn it on the a) check my email, post/read LJ, or if I feel like it and everything else is done play some WoW; b) work on at least 1 thing every night that will either get me/Maggie in better shape or get her house closer to being on the market or sold; c) go to the dentist; d) see my parents each week; e) cook dinner at least 4 nights a week. If I can do those 4 things then I think things will start to pick back up.

So what prompted all of this? Well Tuesday I stayed home from work because I didn’t feel good. I did work stuff until around 2 when the WoW servers went back up. Maggie and I then proceeded to play until about 6, have some dinner and then play until about 9:30. Then we went to bed. The times/details may be a little off, but that’s basically it. I was non-verbally reprimanded by my boss for not calling in (I sent him an email). I felt super bad about this. WoW is to blame. So now, I’m angry at myself and its time for a change. Everyday we come home and the house looks like shit…it won’t for long. I’m going to change things in my life, I’m going to improve my work ethic (which is already higher than most people that work here, but that’s not good enough for me), and I am going to get our houses fixed up.

I understand that I’ve said a lot of the same things over and over or jumped around, but this is my LJ, I can do what I want. I understand that I’m at work right now that I’m contradicting one of my own goals, but again…this is mine. I told Maggie that I was not an “I’ll start on Monday” kinda guy, and I’m not. That’s why we started last night. So I cried on the way to work and it made me realize some things…its life, and I’m not 100% concerned about that. I’ll cry again some day and I’ll move on.

On a side note my mom is my hero. I love her more than anything ever. If you could see how the expression on her face has changed over the past 9 months you would understand. From the first trip to the hospital to today she is a completely different woman. She ditched the wig and is now a proud person. Proud of what she has done, and is no longer ashamed to go out in public with what little hair she has left (it is growing back now). Her treatments are done and they said that everything looks as good as it can look. I can only hope to one day be as half as strong as she is.

is this really happening

ok this was a fantastic and bizzare weekend. it all started friday evening. i went to neal’s place with the intentions of eating…hanging…WoWing…Mardi Gras…neal’s…sleep. things were pretty much on track until we got to mardi gras. as always the “talent” there was top notch. i’ve been there a few times and there are a few of the girls that will come over and talk to us and its pretty cool. well there was this one girl that was really cool and she hung out with us. a few of the other dancers stoped by and would sit for a while with us and then they would go do their thing and then come back. so the night trudged on and we asked if the girl that was hanging with us most of the night wanted to go to waffle house. she was totally up for it.

so it was around 3:00 and one of the other girls came looking for me and asked where Stephanie was (the girl we were hanging with). we found her and as it turns out one of her friends was slipped some sort of drug, GHB to be exact. she did not take to this well and the paramedics were called in. so that pushed our plans back just a bit. so we hung around until about 3:45. by then neal and sean had bolted and we (rick and i) were left with no car and a stripper that wanted to go to waffle house after she got off.

well as luck would have it WH was across the street. rick and i walked, stephanie drove and it was a fantastic time at the WH. afterwords she offered to take rick and i to the appt. we got there and no one would answer their phones to open the gate. it was probably because it was like 4:30ish in the morning. either way we were gonna jump the gate and call it a night. well rick and stephanie got to talking and found out that they were at the muse concert and like the same music and all this stuff. well as it turns out she also grew up like 5 houses from the first house i lived it. THAT’S CRAZY.

so then we were bout to head out and she was like, why don’t you guys just come back to my place. we were like, “i ain’t got nuthin going on tomorrow” and we proceeded to kennesaw. we hung out and played cards and talked and hand apple juice. it was the most surreal thing ever. so after the bashing i received in rummy and slap jack we decided that we should be going. stephanie drove us back to the appt.

i was awake for about 28 hours total and enjoyed every minute of it. rick and i made a new friend that likes to bowl an play pool. we invited her and her friends to come to the party this weekend. so we’ll see how that goes.

now on to more important news…MAGGIE GOT WORLD OF WARCRAFT!!! its truly is an amazing thing. she will now be know as weezymcgoo an undead warlock with a little imp named jakkin (not sure about that name though.) so any way, this is the woman of my dreams…she is TEH RULES! most people have already read her post on the subject, but incase you are reading this for the first time we are on Bloodhoof in the Ring of Fire guild. i am bootacular. it’s going to be fun times from here on out.

oh yeah, i got a promotion at work, i start on the 15th and it’s going to be so much better than my current job. thank you ms. magoo for helping me get that….1,000,000 thanks to you.

ok, that’s enough for now. i’ll be back with more as soon as something happens.
